A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Adeshina Mariam, has appealed to kind-hearted Nigerians to assist her financially in raising the sum of ₦800,000 required for a surgical operation to treat a life-threatening thyroid condition.
Mariam, aged 24, who is currently serving in Ondo State, made the passionate plea during an exclusive interview with OSUN DEFENDER, where she revealed that she has been battling severe symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which has since disrupted her daily life and national assignment.
She explained that the condition, which was diagnosed in November 2024 at Randle General Hospital in Lagos, has left her unable to report to her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), as she struggles with persistent sweating, tremors, and episodes of breathlessness.
“I started noticing strange changes in my body around August last year. I was becoming very lean, my skin got darker, and I felt weak most of the time. When I eventually went to the hospital, I was told I had thyroid,” she recounted.
Despite being posted to Ondo for her NYSC, Mariam said the state coordinator permitted her to seek treatment, given the severity of her health challenge. Since then, she has been on medication, hoping for full recovery through surgery.
According to her, the thyroidectomy recommended by medical experts is estimated to cost ₦800,000. However, through a social media campaign initiated by friends, she has managed to raise ₦350,000 from concerned individuals and students.
“I am thankful to those who have contributed so far. But I still need ₦450,000 to complete the surgery. I just want to live again and fulfil my destiny. I am appealing to Nigerians to please come to my aid,” she pleaded.
Mariam, an alumna of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, and the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, where she obtained her ND and HND respectively, added that the illness has stagnated her progress and left her emotionally drained.
