The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has officially updated the records for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, naming Morocco as champions, Senegal as runners-up, and Nigeria in third place.
The tournament, hosted in Morocco, featured intense competition and standout performances.
Senegal initially looked set to win, while Morocco’s consistency took them to the final. Nigeria impressed with attacking dominance to finish third.
CAF’s Appeal Board overturned the final result following a protest by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), ruling that the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) breached Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations.
Senegal was declared to have forfeited the match, giving Morocco a 3–0 victory.
Nigeria recorded five consecutive wins, scored a tournament-high 14 goals, and averaged 66 percent possession.
Senegal led in passing accuracy, while Morocco and Senegal attempted the most shots. Defensively, Morocco, Comoros, and DR Congo conceded only two goals each.
Individual awards went to Senegal’s Sadio Mané (Player of the Tournament), Morocco’s Brahim Díaz (Top Scorer), Yassine Bounou (Best Goalkeeper), and Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman (Best Playmaker). Morocco also won the Fair Play Award.
The CAF Appeal Board handed down other sanctions: Ismaël Saibari received a reduced two-match suspension, and fines for the Moroccan federation were adjusted, including $50,000 for ball boy incidents and $10,000 for a laser-related offence.
AFCON 2025 will be remembered for both its high-quality football and the dramatic administrative decision that ultimately crowned Morocco champions, with Senegal second and Nigeria third.
