An alleged resignation letter said to have been written by Nafiu Bala has surfaced online, adding a fresh twist to the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress, ADC, following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to suspend recognition of the party’s leadership.
The letter was shared on Wednesday by social media influencer Emma IK Umeh, popularly known as Tcee, via his X handle.
In one of the letters, dated May 18, 2025, Bala was said to have resigned his position as a member of the party’s National Working Committee, with effect from May 26, 2025.
He reportedly said the decision was taken to allow for “a smooth and effective coalition and restructuring” within the party.
The letter, addressed to the ADC National Chairman, stated that his resignation was not a departure from the party.
It added that he remained available to serve in any other capacity if called upon in the future.
In a separate letter addressed to the Chairman of INEC at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the party reportedly informed the electoral body that Bala had tendered his resignation on May 17, 2025.
The ADC said the resignation was duly received, considered and accepted by its National Working Committee in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.
The party also said a copy of Bala’s resignation letter was attached for INEC’s record.
In the correspondence, the ADC leadership asked the commission to update its records to reflect the change in the party’s leadership structure.
The letter was signed by the party’s National Chairman, Ralph Okey Nwosu, and National Secretary, Alhaji Said Baba Abdullahi.
Although the authenticity of the letters could not be independently verified, their emergence has further fuelled tension surrounding the ADC’s internal leadership battle.
The development came shortly after INEC on Wednesday removed the names of former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, respectively.
The commission also said it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through the courts.
INEC further stated that it would suspend recognition of all factions within the party and would not monitor any convention or congress organised by the rival groups until a substantive suit before the Federal High Court is determined.
