Netizens have called out the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, over his claim that the ruling Accord Party in Osun State was preventing the APC from mounting billboards in the state.
Basiru had while speaking at Coventry University, United Kingdom, alleged the incumbent administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke of impunity, and trying to suppress the opposition in the state.
In one of the videos of the event posted on his Facebook page, the former Senate spokesperson, also alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party killed a lot of people in the Ijesa axis during the 2022 gubernatorial election, calling on security agencies to ensure a level playing ground for all actors this time around.
He said, “During the 2022 election in Osun, a lot of people were killed particularly in the Ijesa axis of the state by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party with impunity. Even on the day of the election, voting went ahead in Ede until about 10:p.m and a lot of our people were arrested and kept in detention ahead of that election.
“We have also seen that scenario starting again in Osun. I have paid for billboards to promote our party’s candidate for close to one year now but the Signage agency in Osun has not allowed us to mount a single billboard even after our payment.
“They refunded 50 per cent of my money and they are still holding my money now to promote our candidate and President Bola Tinubu. Yet, they will say they are supporting President Bola Tinubu and they cannot allow us to mount billboards to promote President Tinubu.
Also, the billboards of the APC are being pulled down in several locations like Ilesa, Osogbo and other places with impunity. I think we need to appeal to the security agencies, particularly those on the ground in Osun, they need to create a level playing ground for all actors to be able to mobilise. This idea of trying to suppress the opposition in Osun by the Accord ruling party is not accepted.”
However, netizens who commented under the video, slammed the APC national scribe for his claims, noting that the billboards of the candidates of the APC in the August 15 gubernatorial election were all over the state.
Commenting, a Facebook user, Seyi Adeniyi, wrote, “Sincerely, SRJ should be ashamed for saying this. Telling lies with impunity. As of this morning, we have many of AMBO’s billboards in Osun State, even in strategic locations.
“Anyways, I wouldn’t blame him, he has already seen the failure and rejection of his party, APC in Osun State.
Aderanti Rotimi, wrote, “Be reminded how you guys refused Adeleke the freedom park and Osogbo stadium, how you guys threatened the Ataoja of Osogbo, how you guys manipulated some INEC officials. You travelled all the way to UK to market lies to those the wickedness of your party frustrated out of Nigeria.”
Also commenting, Taiwo AbdulRahmon, wrote, “You did more than this in 2022 while you are a DG of former governor and moreover your party billboards is everywhere in Osogbo even more than the incumbent governor.”
