The member of the House of Representatives representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Hon. Bamidele Salam, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and deploy a special emergency force to rescue abducted Oyo students and teachers still held by terrorists.
In a post on his Facebook on Sunday, Salam said he does not believe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde would be pleased with the current situation.
It would be recalled that scores of teachers and students were abducted during coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area of the state, penultimate Friday.
Salam in the post said, “I do not think President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu or Governor Seyi Makinde would be happy with the horrifying conditions of the children and teachers still being held by terrorists in some dingy forest somewhere on the soil of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
“But I do not think the rescue of these victims is getting the kind of urgent attention required,” the lawmaker added.
Salam expressed concern that Nigeria’s leadership lacks the political will to decisively confront what he described as “this rampaging evil.”
He noted that insecurity has worsened over the last 17 years due to the absence of a robust security framework.
“It is regrettable that no government in the last 17 years has been able to fashion out a robust security architecture to curtail the activities of the criminal-minded groups in our midst. Rather, the problem has festered, gained momentum and crossed boundaries over the years,” he stated.
To address the crisis, Salam urged the Federal Government to suspend other priorities and focus solely on security for 6 to 12 months.
“I think it is time the Federal Government declares a state of emergency on insecurity in Nigeria. Let us suspend everything suspendable and face this one problem within a timeframe of 6 to 12 months,” he said.
He proposed the creation of a specially trained and equipped force, backed by Nigerian experts at home and abroad.
“Let us create an emergency squad of well motivated, well equipped and numerically strong force to combat this menace. Let us invite all our best brains, locally and from the diaspora to manage this special force and reset our security architecture,” Salam stated.
Giving a blunt assessment of the current approach by the government, the federal lawmaker said, “Let us stop pretending that ‘we are on top of the situation’ because in all honesty, this ugly situation is on top of us!”
