The Osun State APC Governorship Campaign Council, has alleged that the ruling Accord Party vandalised its own billboards in order to gain sympathy from the public.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that the campaign team of Governor Ademola Adeleke, had earlier, alleged that the APC was sponsoring thugs to destroy the Accord Party billboards across the state.
The Imole Campaign Council in a statement by its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, alleged that the destruction was carried out in the presence of security officers, calling on the Inspector General of Police to wade into the matter.
Olajengbesi said, “In the early hours of today, billboards belonging to the Imole Campaign and the ACCORD were vandalised and destroyed across several parts of Osun State, including Irewole, Ayedaade, Ife, Irepodun, Oriade and Osogbo Local Governments.
“We have it on good authority that this operation was coordinated by a notorious thug identified as Asiri Eniba, allegedly aided by some compromised security operatives who supervised or looked away while these criminal acts were carried out. This development is extremely dangerous and must not be ignored,” the statement partly read.
Olajengbesi further said, “Having failed to inspire the people with any meaningful agenda or alternative vision for governance, and being overwhelmed by the massive acceptance Governor Ademola Adeleke continues to enjoy across the state, the APC and its operatives now appear determined to embrace intimidation, violence, destruction of opposition materials, and fear tactics as a political strategy.
“This is not ordinary politics. This is a direct threat to democratic engagement, political freedom, and peaceful participation in the electoral process.
“We therefore call on the Inspector General of Police to immediately order a full investigation into these coordinated attacks and ensure that all persons involved, including their sponsors and collaborators, are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
But the APC in a statement by Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, the Head, Media and Publicity Committee for the campaign team of Mr Bola Oyebamiji, the gubernatorial candidate of the party, said the allegation was false, baseless, and a desperate attempt to “hang a dog in order to give it a bad name.”
Omowaiye said the statement by the Imole Campaign Council was an attempt to distract public attention from the failures and corruption allegations trailing the Adeleke administration.
“In the last few days, the public space has been inundated with reports concerning the arrest and detention of the Chief of Staff to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Alhaji Kazeem Akinleye; the Accountant-General of Osun State, Mr Rasheed Olalere Alabi and other key officials of the current administration.
“Specifically, there are allegations bordering on the diversion and expenditure without appropriation of the N14.9 billion ecological fund meant for victims of rainstorms and floods, diversion of the N2 billion Federal Government grant intended for the procurement of modern buses, as well as the alleged diversion of over N100 billion belonging to local governments in Osun State.
“Faced with mounting public outrage and increasing criticism from civil society groups and concerned residents, the troubled Adeleke administration now appears determined to resort to self-vandalism, propaganda, and concocted allegations against the opposition in a futile bid to gain public sympathy and shift attention from its woeful performance,” Omowaiye stated.
