A teacher at Government Girls’ Day Secondary School (GGDSS), Tudun Wada, Gusau, Zamfara State, Zainab Abdullahi, has reportedly died after she was allegedly hit by a Nigerian Army vehicle said to have been driven recklessly.
According to SaharaReporters, the incident occurred on Wednesday in front of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, while the deceased was on her way to school.
A source familiar with the incident, Zainab was riding on a motorcycle when the Army vehicle allegedly struck her.
The source further alleged that the soldiers in the vehicle drove away from the scene without stopping to assist the victim or ascertain her condition.
“It was a Nigerian Army vehicle. They hit and killed Zainab through reckless driving. She was on her way to school when the vehicle ran over her in front of FMC Gusau. The soldiers drove off without stopping,” the source said.
Zainab was said to have later died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.
Her funeral prayer was held on Wednesday at her family residence behind Man Dinawa in Gusau, with family members, colleagues, friends and sympathisers in attendance.
Reacting to the incident, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) described the teacher’s death as shocking and heartbreaking.
The union called on the Zamfara State Government and the Nigerian Army to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.
“The Authority of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools received this information with great dismay and calls on the Zamfara State Government and the Nigerian Army to investigate the matter and ensure justice is done to this noble teacher,” the union said in a statement.
The union also prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul, saying, “May her soul rest in peace.”
The incident has thrown the school community into mourning, with colleagues and students grieving the loss of the teacher.
