Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has alleged that the fight against terrorism in Nigeria has become a costly industry, with trillions of naira reportedly spent while citizens continue to face insecurity.
Ezekwesili made the allegation during an interview with News Central Television, where she criticised poor governance and weak accountability in the country’s fight against terrorism.
According to her, the continued insecurity despite huge financial allocations raises questions about how resources meant to tackle the problem are being utilised.
“Fighting terrorism is now an industry from which people who have the levers of power, starting from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to the military establishment, are benefiting.
“They need to be telling Nigerians what the performance is from the kind of trillions of naira that has been allegedly used to fight insecurity in the country. The results point to the fact of poor governance,” she said.
The former minister also warned that treating the lives of citizens with levity could embolden terrorists and other enemies of the state by creating the impression that the government does not care about the safety of Nigerians.
On the establishment of state police, Ezekwesili said effective policing would require good governance and clear delineation of responsibilities among the various levels of government.
She stressed that clarity of mandates would be necessary to ensure accountability and effective security management if state police is introduced.
