- As Osun Govt Orders Immediate Probe
The Osun State Government has ordered a thorough investigation into a viral video in which corps members serving in Iwo alleged that there was no medical personnel on duty at the General Hospital, Iwo.
Some youth corps members serving in Iwo, Osun State, have raised concerns about the unavailability of medical personnel at the General Hospital when they went there for treatment on Saturday night.
In a video shared on TikTok handle @crazyteeandi on Saturday night, one of the corps members was heard saying that one of his colleagues fell ill at night and they were at the hospital to get him treated.
In the video, which was taken at the hospital premises, the corps members were heard lamenting that they did not meet anyone at the hospital.
According to a voice in the video, they got to the hospital at 10:05 p.m. but met no doctor or staff member to attend to them.
He described the experience as deeply troubling and questioned what would have happened if the patient they brought was facing a life-threatening emergency at that hour.
“This is the General Hospital, Iwo and as big as it is, no single doctor or nurse here to attend to us. If the situation is an emergency, only God knows what will happen.
“How will someone come to the hospital at 10:05 p.m. and meet nobody to treat patients? We are corps members, and we came here to serve,” he said.
A caption that accompanied the video on TikTok read: “I was posted to serve in Osun State, but unfortunately, I fell ill in the middle of the night and had to seek medical attention at Osun State Hospital. To my greatest disappointment, there was not a single doctor or staff member available to attend to patients.
“No medical personnel, no assistance, and no one to respond to people in need of urgent medical care. This is deeply troubling and heartbreaking. What happens when someone arrives with a life-threatening emergency in the middle of the night?
“What happens when every second matters and there is no doctor, nurse, or medical staff available to provide assistance? A hospital should be a place of hope, safety, and urgent care, not a place where sick people are left helpless because it is nighttime. People do not choose when emergencies happen.
“Illnesses do not wait until morning, and neither should medical attention. I sincerely hope the relevant authorities look into this situation and take urgent action. No one should have to face such helplessness in a place meant to save lives. Our lives matter, and access to emergency healthcare should never depend on the time of day.”
Reacting to the incident on Sunday, the Special Adviser on Public Health to the Governor, Dr. Akindele Adekunle, said he has directed the Permanent Secretary of the Hospital Management Board to investigate the matter.
“I got the report this morning and have directed the Permanent Secretary, Hospital Management Board, to thoroughly investigate this and act accordingly,” Dr. Adekunle said in a message to OSUN DEFENDER.
