- Osun Central Senator May Lose Seat
Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Thursday mocked the Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District, Olubiyi Fadeyi, popularly known as Ajagunla, following his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The remarks came during plenary after the Senate read a letter from Ajagunla notifying the Red Chamber of his decision to return to the PDP, citing disagreements within the APC.
In the letter, the senator said he joined the APC in good faith to support President Bola Tinubu but decided to leave following what he described as a breach of agreements, lack of internal democracy and actions by the Osun APC leadership that had created “serious trust issues” within the party.
Fadeyi claimed he was assured of the APC ticket for the 2027 Osun Central Senatorial election but alleged that the agreement was not honoured after the party failed to adopt a genuine consensus process.
Reacting to the letter, Akpabio questioned the basis of the senator’s defection, arguing that the grievances he raised related to the Osun State chapter of the APC rather than the national leadership of the party.
“He’s putting himself in trouble here, because it’s supposed to be disagreement at the national level, but he’s talking about Osun State. Disagreement in a state party cannot result in defection,” Akpabio said.
He also faulted the content of the letter, saying, “This letter seems to have been written in bad faith, so the Senate has the right to declare this letter mala fide.”
In a sarcastic remark that drew laughter from lawmakers, the Senate President added, “Maybe he’s resigning from politics totally.”
Akpabio further poked fun at the lawmaker for failing to specify the faction of the PDP he was joining, a comment that again sparked laughter among senators.
“He didn’t even indicate the faction of the PDP he is defecting to,” Akpabio said.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that Senator Fadeyi had earlier defected from the PDP to the APC in 2025 but recently lost the APC ticket for the Osun Central Senatorial District to another aspirant, Adegoke Adekunle Rasheed.
