Former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has hailed Brazilian President 0’s re-election, describing it as a victory for the working class and progressive forces in Brazil and across the world.
Aregbesola, in a statement titled “Viva: It’s Lula in Brazil,” said the outcome of Sunday’s presidential runoff represented a significant setback for right-wing political forces in Central and South America.
He also described it as a rejection of the growing influence of corporate interests and the oligarchy in Latin America.
According to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Lula of the Workers’ Party (PT) secured 64,256,232 votes, representing 51.79 per cent of valid votes, to defeat his challenger, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL), who polled 59,826,041 votes, or 48.21 per cent.
Aregbesola said the result was particularly significant for progressive forces, as Lula’s victory had halted the momentum of right-wing political parties in the region.
The former governor also said the outcome had strengthened the position of the BRICS bloc, a grouping of major emerging economies, while challenging what he described as the advance of corporate interests and oligarchic power in Latin America.
“Sunday’s victory means that the winning streak of right-wing political parties in Central and South America has been firmly arrested. The assault on BRICS is neutralized and the triumphant march of corporate interests and oligarchy in Latin America is stopped.
“Lula has secured an unprecedented victory by retaining the presidency of Latin America’s largest country, denying a crucial win to the region’s right wing.
“It is a victory for the working class of Brazil and the world,” Aregbesola wrote in a post on his social handles on Monday.
