The Rivers State Police Command has queried and relieved the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the affected police outpost after suspected cultists reportedly renovated the facility and visited it to celebrate the completion of the project.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, according to a video circulating on social media.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, and signed by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the police said they had taken note of the viral report and ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The command added that the affected officers had been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
The police, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Olugbenga A. Adepoju, condemned any action or association capable of undermining the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The command stressed that police facilities were public institutions established to protect citizens and enforce the law, warning that they must not become platforms for criminal groups to seek recognition or influence.
It reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on criminality and any conduct capable of eroding public confidence in the police.
As part of the investigation, the commissioner directed investigators to identify the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation of the Abuloma Police Outpost.
Investigators were also directed to determine which officers authorised the project, whether the necessary procedures and approvals were obtained, and whether any personnel breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the force.
The command said the investigation would further examine the extent of police personnel’s involvement and establish whether appropriate background checks were conducted on those who financed or facilitated the renovation.
While acknowledging that communities could legitimately contribute to improving police facilities, the command emphasised that such assistance must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.
It cited Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund, noting that all legitimate donations must comply with the relevant legal and administrative procedures.
The police stressed that donations or other forms of assistance would not grant anyone immunity from investigation or prosecution.
The command further warned that officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action, while legal proceedings would be initiated where warranted by the investigation and applicable laws.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, the protection of lives and property, and the fight against cultism and organised crime in Rivers State.
Members of the public were urged to remain calm and provide credible and timely information to assist security agencies in maintaining peace and tackling criminal activities across the state.
The command also provided contact details for its Complaint Response Unit for members of the public wishing to report complaints or provide relevant information.
